Uncertainties over the continued funding of NIF seemed to be resolved, see FY 2006 DOE Appropriations Bill: Nuclear Weapons Programs. NIF had done first hohlraum experiments, it is said the result has been shown to agree with expectations, and is similar to those required for future fusion experiments. (Dewald et al., Physical Review Letters, 18 November 2005).

Yes, laser physicists in European union have proposed to bulid a a "fast ignition" laser fusion facility. It is cheaper and more on supporting scientific research than military potential.

I wonder if they'll convert
I wonder if they'll convert the NIF to fast ignition. It would be more beneficial to fusion energy research to develop a fast ignition system, but it might make some people question if it's worth spending billions on NIF only to create a system that could have been developed with less money. I guess NIF will probably end up being primarily for weapons research instead of a model for future energy generating reactors.
