Up to 97 per cent of people have experienced that feeling of witnessing a recreation of something they have already seen, and now d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu itself has been recreated in the lab. The experiment could throw light not only on the possible causes of the phenomenon but also on the fundamental workings of human memory.<\/p>\n<p>Two key processes are thought to occur when someone recognises a familiar object or scene. First, the brain searches through memory traces to see if the contents of that scene have been observed before. If they have, a separate part of the brain then identifies the scene or object as being familiar.
