常看到英语 blogger 们预期一段时间不能更新 blog 时，就发个帖子说 take a hiatus。我也要 take a hiatus 啦，大概半个月的时间。

Dictionary.com 上的解释：

hiatus  /haɪˈeɪtəs/ –noun, plural -tus‧es, -tus.

1. a break or interruption in the continuity of a work, series, action, etc.
2. a missing part; gap or lacuna: Scholars attempted to account for the hiatus in the medieval manuscript.
3. any gap or opening.
4. Grammar, Prosody. the coming together, with or without break or slight pause, and without contraction, of two vowels in successive words or syllables, as in see easily.
5. Anatomy. a natural fissure, cleft, or foramen in a bone or other structure.

一直以为全世界的博士论文答辩都是一样的，准备好透明片/PPT，先讲上45分钟到一个小时，然后答辩委员会成员提问，回答，提问，回答。。。然后就过了。

但是前一阵子，我的同事回英国曼彻斯特大学博士论文答辩，我以为他得忙着修饰他的 PPT，结果不是。他们的答辩形式不同，他也需要在开始稍微陈述一下论文的工作，但主要内容是与答辩委员们的讨论，包括论文的内容，也包括对之后工作的建议等等。好像得两三个小时。

这种形式与我们熟知的形式相比，对答辩人和答辩委员会成员的要求都提高了。

前一种形式下，答辩人可以通过报告，直接影响答辩委员会成员的思路，把他们的注意力引到自己准备充分的地方去。：）答辩委员会成员们，也可以通过报告，了解论文的内容。我比较怀疑，有不少参加答辩会的教授，可能之前并没有好好读过论文内容。特别是5、6月份答辩高峰期，他们的时间精力也有限。

不知道哪些地方也采用后一种形式。或者，还有其它形式么？
